A Drop of Light
In addition to the long-term support provided through the “Building Homes, Bonding Families” programme, we also provide short to medium term assistance to children and families in need, especially those headed by single parents with little or no income, and families with parents and/or children with severe disabilities. Often, these 2 categories tend to overlap. This is also implemented primarily in the Southern Province, although in 2022 we expanded to the Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces as well.
There are any number of families and children who need urgent support for survival, health and education, especially in the current times of pandemics and socio-economic crises. The issues as well as the needs are overwhelming. However, we make an effort to reach out to at least a few families with a drop of light, hope and relief, depending on the availability of funds. We adopt a two-pronged approach here to match the donors and families:

-
We find the donors who are willing to contribute when we receive a particular request for support from the ground (e.g. food support for families affected by COVID).
-
We find the relevant families when a donor approaches us with an interest to support families or children with a specific intent (e.g. provision of tuition fee for a period of time).
All the support is channelled through the relevant government social workers based on verified information and approvals of the Divisional Secretary of the area.
Since 2017, we have supported over 1000 families and individuals (including children) with food, medical and educational assistance, with the financial contribution of many individual donors. This included 20 families who were deeply affected economically due to the pandemic, whom we supported in 2021 with dry rations. In addition, we provided food support (dry rations) to 800 families in the Southern, Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces in Sri Lanka, who were the worst-affected by the unparalleled economic crisis that hit the country in 2022. There are a large number of more families in extreme situations whom we could help in this manner if we could garner some support from your generous hearts. Even $1 would go far and we also accept direct material support. We would be very grateful for donor references as well.
